   • Grade 7 (Ti-0.2Pd): Contains 0.2% palladium for enhanced corrosion resistance in aggressive environments, often used in chemical and marine applications.

   The composition of the filler rod is designed to match the alloy of the base material being welded to ensure the weld has similar properties to the base material.

2. Choosing the Right Filler Rod:

   • Match the Base Material: It's crucial to match the filler rod to the titanium alloy of the base materials. Using a different grade filler rod can result in a weld with inferior mechanical properties, such as reduced strength or corrosion resistance.
   • Filler Rod Diameter: The diameter of the filler rod is chosen based on the thickness of the material being welded and the welding process. Common diameters range from 0.035 inches (0.9 mm) to 1/8 inches (3.2 mm), but can vary depending on specific needs. For thinner sections, smaller rods are used, while thicker materials may require larger filler rods.
   • Purity of Filler Rod: Titanium is highly reactive at high temperatures, so it's important to use high-purity filler rods (usually at least 99.5% pure) to avoid contamination that could compromise the weld.

3. Welding Process with Titanium Filler Rods:

   TIG welding titanium typically involves the following steps:

   • Preheating: Preheating is not always required for thin sections, but for thicker titanium sections, it may help reduce the risk of cracking and improve the overall weld quality.
   • Tungsten Electrode: The tungsten electrode creates the arc but does not melt into the weld pool. The filler rod is added manually to fill the joint.
   • Shielding Gas: An inert shielding gas, usually argon, is used to protect the weld from contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Sometimes a mix of argon and helium is used to increase heat input for thicker materials.
